In a robust community-driven effort to foster environmental sustainability, approximately 80 dedicated volunteers from the University of Indonesia engaged in a comprehensive Beach Clean Up event at Marunda Beach, North Jakarta, on May 19th. This initiative, organized in collaboration with Green Polymer Technology Student Chapter Universitas Indonesia (GPTech SCUI), Community Outreach Ikatan Mahasiswa Program Internasional Fakultas Teknik Universitas Indonesia (IMPI FTUI), and the Center for Sustainability and Waste Management at Universitas Indonesia (CSWM UI), not only focused on cleaning the coastal area but also incorporated educational workshops and community outreach.
“Through these collective efforts, we aim to uplift awareness of environmental issues and inspire continuous community engagement to protect and restore our local ecosystems”
This significant environmental initiative was made possible with the generous support and sponsorship of Chandra Asri Petrochemical, a leader in sustainable industry practices. Chandra Asri’s involvement underlines its commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
The event kicked off with an enlightening workshop at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), where participants were equipped with knowledge about effective waste management practices. The day continued with hands-on cleaning at Marunda Beach and concluded with an outreach program aimed at educating the local residents about the importance of proper waste disposal and sorting.
The results of the clean-up were significant, with volunteers successfully collecting a total of 107 kilograms of waste, categorized into 14 kilograms of organic waste, 62 kilograms of plastic waste, and 31 kilograms of other waste. The waste collection was efficiently organized into 8 groups of volunteers, demonstrating the power of coordinated community action.
“GPTech SCUI 2024, together with our partners at IMPI FTUI 2024 Community Outreach and CSWM UI, with the full support of Chandra Asri Petrochemical are proud to lead by example in tackling environmental challenges. Engaging with the community and educating our youth are critical steps towards sustainable developmentā
This Beach Clean Up event is just one of many initiatives that the University of Indonesia and its partners undertake to promote environmental awareness and action towards a sustainable future.
